Is the countryside under siege?
Updated: Aug 9, 2022
Living in the countryside has its cons to be sure: pungent country odours; having to drive into town for any sort of social activity and most services; power cuts whenever there's a storm; unreliable internet; narrow roads where you are liable to get stuck behind a tractor or a herd of cows. But for me the pros far outweigh these minor inconveniences. The fresh air, the space, being able to eat locally produced food, and even grow it yourself, the unlimited potential for outdoor sports on the doorstep, the lack of crowds. ... I could go on and on. That's why I've lived in the countryside for most of my life.
Oh yes, the lack of crowds. That's a huge pro in these pandemic times. And it seems many city dwellers are starting to see that too. Our previously peaceful little corner of the country has started to buzz with activity over the past year. Cars with city plates cruise the quiet, narrow village roads, sales of land seem to be booming, with 'for sale' signs are popping up in even the most remote and unpromising-looking fields, real estate prices have rocketed, and pretty meadows and woodlands have become ugly building sites for imposing villas.
Change is inevitable I know. And we welcome new neighbours - they bring fresh ideas and outlooks as well as obvious economic benefits to the region. But let's hope the booming interest in seeking a healthy and peaceful life in the country doesnt cause the unwitting destruction of the very beauty and charm that attracts us all in the first place.
Do you live in the city or the country? Have you noticed changes where you live and if so, how do you feel about that? I'd love to you to share your thoughts in the comments box.
